Glasgow becomes Gotham as Batman sequel starts filming in city centre
Glasgow is being transformed into Gotham City as filming gets under way on the sequel to The Batman.
Production on The Batman Part II moves onto the streets of Glasgow from Tuesday, 18 August, beginning a major three-week location shoot across the city centre and along the River Clyde.
The Batmobile has already been spotted in the city, with the distinctive vehicle noticed being transported into the production area around St Vincent Lane ahead of filming.
Robert Pattinson returns as Bruce Wayne and Batman in director Matt Reeves’ follow-up to his 2022 blockbuster.
Large sections of Glasgow are being used to recreate Gotham, with filming locations including Bothwell Street, Wellington Street, Pitt Street, Glasgow Bridge, the Broomielaw and streets beneath the Kingston Bridge.
Road and pedestrian restrictions are being introduced around the locations as crews take control of parts of the city for filming.
Some of the most intensive activity is expected around Bothwell Street and Wellington Street, where restrictions will remain in place over a number of nights.
Further filming is planned around the Clyde, including Glasgow Bridge and the Broomielaw, while North Street and Newton Street beneath the Kingston Bridge are also being used by the production.
The scale of the shoot means Glasgow could provide considerably more screen time in the sequel than it did in the first film.
Glasgow previously became Gotham for The Batman when crews arrived in February 2020.
The area around Glasgow Cathedral and the Necropolis was used for scenes involving Batman travelling through Gotham on a motorcycle. Pattinson was not required for much of the location work, with a stunt performer wearing the Batsuit during filming.
The city’s Gothic and Victorian architecture has helped make Glasgow a regular stand-in for fictional and international locations in major productions.
More recently, large areas of the city centre were transformed into New York for Marvel’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day, while previous productions filmed in Glasgow have included Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and World War Z.
The Batman Part II began principal photography earlier this summer. Pattinson is joined in the sequel by returning cast members including Colin Farrell as Oz Cobb, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon and Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth. Scarlett Johansson and Sebastian Stan are among the new additions to the cast.
The first film was released in 2022 and took more than $770 million at the worldwide box office.
The Batman Part II is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on 18 February 2028.
