Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for release in November 2026 after two delays, with Rockstar Games confirming its protagonists, setting and supported consoles, while an extended gameplay presentation has provided the clearest look yet at its missions, combat and open world.
Release date
Rockstar Games has announced that Grand Theft Auto VI will be released on 19 November 2026 following two delays.
The game was initially scheduled for autumn 2025, then moved to 26 May 2026 and postponed again until November.
Gameplay preview
Rockstar Games and Netflix premiered Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look on 27 August 2026.
The presentation featured nearly 30 minutes of in-game footage captured on PlayStation 5.
It was available exclusively on Netflix for six hours before Rockstar released it on YouTube.
The footage showed story scenes, missions, driving, combat and open-world activities involving the game’s two protagonists.
According to Ampere Analysis data reported in September, the presentation attracted 31.1m Netflix views during its first four days.
Ampere Analysis also estimated that it generated more than 100,000 US sign-ups during the six-hour Netflix exclusivity window.
Rockstar has not confirmed reports that the game will feature a more advanced non-playable character system in which police may remember details such as a player’s clothes, hairstyle or mask.
The company has also not confirmed claims that characters’ eating habits will affect their appearance.
Main characters and story
GTA VI will have two main playable characters, compared with the three featured in GTA V.
The protagonists are Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, a pair who, according to Rockstar’s official description, have always known that the “deck is stacked against them”.
After an easy score goes wrong, Jason and Lucia become caught in a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida.
Rockstar says they must rely on each other to survive.
Setting and map
The game is set in the fictional US state of Leonida, based on Florida, and includes Vice City, Rockstar’s fictional version of Miami, as its main city.
Other announced areas include the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park.
Rockstar has not confirmed reports from preview briefings claiming that Leonida’s playable area will be around three times the size of the map in Red Dead Redemption 2 and about twice the size of GTA V’s map.
The company has not published exact dimensions.
Claims that the game will contain “hundreds of accessible interiors” also remain unconfirmed.
Platforms
Rockstar has confirmed GTA VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S.
The company has not announced a PC version, although its previous major releases arrived on PC after their console debuts.
Rockstar has also not confirmed whether the game will receive specific enhancements for the PS5 Pro.
Pre-orders and editions
Pre-orders opened on 25 June 2026 alongside the release of the game’s official artwork.
The Standard Edition costs £69.99, while the Ultimate Edition costs £89.99.
The Ultimate Edition includes premium vehicles, clothing, personalised weapons and two Vehicle Mod Shops featuring additional customisation options.
The Ultimate Edition is currently available only digitally, while owners of the Standard Edition can purchase a separate digital upgrade.
The Vintage Vice City Pack is available as a pre-order bonus and includes a two-tone ’55 Vapid Stanier sedan, the Shore Court Garage on Ocean Beach, throwback outfits and an exclusive weapon pattern.
Digital pre-orders also include one free month of GTA+ for GTA Online.
Rockstar’s edition and platform guidance says physical Standard editions will contain a download code for the full game rather than a disc.
Miami advertising campaign
Miami Beach commissioners voted 4–3 on 10 September to authorise negotiations over a proposed GTA VI advertising campaign, allowing talks to proceed without approving a final contract.
Under the proposal, privately operated beach chairs and umbrellas would display the Roman numeral VI or the words Vice City without directly mentioning GTA or Grand Theft Auto, and the campaign would run from 15 October until the end of the year, pausing during Art Basel in December.
Reports valued Rockstar’s initial proposal at approximately $3m. Commissioners discussed seeking a total benefit closer to $4m. Commissioner Tanya K. Bhatt said proceeds could support an unfunded plan to renovate the Flamingo Park football field.
However, others opposed associating Miami Beach with a series centred on crime and violence.
A separate “Welcome to Vice City” sign was installed on the roof of the Miami Heat’s Kaseya Centre on 22 September.
CBS Miami reported that Miami-Dade County would receive approximately $975,000 for the placement.
Rockstar also reportedly explored promotions at other county locations despite opposition from Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz and County Commissioner Juan Carlos Bermudez to broader use of public facilities.
What remains unconfirmed
Rockstar has not confirmed a PC release, PS5 Pro enhancements, the map’s exact dimensions or reported features involving interiors and non-playable characters.
Separately, the final terms of the proposed Miami Beach campaign remain under negotiation.
This article will be updated as Rockstar confirms further details ahead of Grand Theft Auto VI’s release on 19 November 2026.
