A new bathhouse and spa has opened beneath Glasgow city centre, offering visitors the chance to escape the bustle of the streets and experience Mediterranean-inspired wellness without leaving the heart of the city.
Atera Bathhouse & Spa is located beneath the Radisson Blu Hotel on Argyle Street, transforming an underground space into a 2,400-square-metre wellness destination following an investment of around £6 million.
The concept centres on thermal bathing, relaxation and treatments, drawing inspiration from traditional Mediterranean bathing rituals.
Visitors can explore a range of facilities designed around heat, water and rest, with the aim of creating a space where people can slow down and take time for themselves.
At the heart of the experience is a 12-metre hydrotherapy pool, which Atera describes as the largest of its kind in Scotland. The pool is maintained at around 37C and features jets designed to provide a massage-like experience.
The facilities also include Finnish and ceremonial saunas, a steam room and cold plunge pools, allowing visitors to move between hot and cold environments as part of their bathing experience.
For those looking to explore traditional bathing practices, the spa offers a hammam and Rhassoul experience. The hammam involves steam and exfoliation, while Rhassoul incorporates mineral-rich Moroccan clay as part of a body treatment.
There are also seven specialist treatment rooms offering massages, facials and body treatments, with products from skincare brands Elemis and Comfort Zone.
Beyond the spa facilities, Atera has placed a focus on fitness and wider wellbeing. The venue includes a gym, movement studios and reformer Pilates, alongside a wellness-focused café serving food inspired by Mediterranean principles.
The addition of the café offers visitors another way to spend time at the venue, whether they are stopping in for refreshments or combining their visit with a longer wellness experience.
The opening also marks a significant investment in Glasgow’s hospitality and wellness offering, bringing a new concept to the city centre.
With its location beneath one of the city’s best-known hotels, Atera is positioned to appeal to both local residents and visitors looking to incorporate relaxation into their stay.
While spa treatments and thermal bathing are often associated with countryside retreats or destination hotels, Atera offers an alternative for those looking to enjoy a wellness break in the middle of Glasgow.
Visitors can access the venue from Oswald Street, with direct lift access also available from within the Radisson Blu Hotel.
Atera is open to day visitors as well as hotel guests, with bookings available for bathing experiences and treatments.
As Glasgow continues to develop its hospitality offering, the underground spa adds another option for people looking to take time out from the pace of city life — without having to travel far from the centre. You can book here.
