A proposal has been lodged to build a Lidl supermarket on derelict land in Paisley creating 40 local jobs.
The discount retailer has submitted a request for planning permission at the site of the demolished St James Business Centre in Linwood Road.
The building which was formerly an office block for the plant where the Hillman Imp was manufactured in the 1960s and 1970s was knocked down last year.
If given the green light by Renfrewshire Council, the multi-million pound investment will bring a single-storey food store with a 116-space customer car park, delivering a significant boost to the local economy.
A planning statement from agent Rapleys LLP, said: “The proposal, located on Linwood Road, Paisley, will provide a new and modern discount food store for the residents in the locality.
“The proposal will improve customer choice and enhance the shopping experience for shoppers in Linwood and the neighbouring areas, and will also promote sustainable travel patterns.
“The proposals have demonstrated through a sequential site assessment that there are no alternative sites available to accommodate the broad type of development proposed.
“In addition, through a retail impact assessment, it has also been demonstrated that the proposal will not adversely impact any defined retail centres.
“The proposed building will provide a contemporary design that will complement the visual character of the surrounding area.
“There will be a positive economic impact as a result of new employment and increased earnings in the local area.”
