Scottish actress Sharon Rooney has been eliminated from The Celebrity Traitors one episode before the final.
The Glasgow star, who was the only Scottish contestant in this year’s celebrity line-up, was ‘murdered’ by the Traitors during Thursday night’s dramatic semi-final.
Rooney had narrowly survived banishment at the start of the episode after last week’s round table ended on a cliffhanger.
She and Irish comedian Joanne McNally had been left tied in the vote, with Traitor King Kenny holding the balance of power after winning a dagger which gave him an additional vote.
Kenny had initially voted for Rooney but used his second vote to send McNally home, with the comedian revealing to the group that she had been a Faithful throughout the game.
Rooney’s reprieve proved short-lived.
The remaining Traitors – Maya Jama, James Acaster and King Kenny – subsequently decided to murder the Scottish actress, removing another Faithful from the competition ahead of Friday night’s final. The move was intended to increase suspicion around actor Michael Sheen.
Rooney had been Scotland’s sole representative among the 21 celebrities who entered Ardross Castle at the beginning of the second series.
The Glasgow-born actress rose to prominence as Rae Earl in Channel 4 comedy-drama My Mad Fat Diary and went on to appear in BBC sitcom Two Doors Down.
Her film credits include Disney’s Dumbo and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, where she played Lawyer Barbie.
Ahead of entering the castle, Rooney admitted she was hoping to play the game by sticking to her own instincts rather than following the crowd.
She said: “My strategy for the game is like my strategy in life, and I think it would just be – keep yourself right.”
She added that she would not vote for somebody simply because other contestants were doing so, saying: “I’ll be true to myself, and I won’t just go along with the crowd.”
Rooney had also joked before filming that she hoped the contestants she became close to would not “murder or banish” her.
The Celebrity Traitors is filmed at Ardross Castle in the Scottish Highlands and is produced by Studio Lambert Scotland.
The remaining contestants will now head into the final on Friday night, with the Faithfuls attempting to identify and remove the Traitors before the game comes to an end.
The Celebrity Traitors final airs on BBC One and BBC iPlayer at 8pm on Friday 30 October.
