Detectives are carrying out extensive enquiries after a 21-year-old man died following an assault in Glasgow city centre.

Police were called to Royal Exchange Square at around 3.05am on Sunday, 4 October, following reports of a disturbance involving a group of men.

Emergency services attended and a 21-year-old man, who had suffered serious injuries during an assault, was taken to hospital for treatment.

Police have now confirmed that he died in hospital on Monday, 5 October.

No one has yet been arrested in connection with the young man’s death.

A 19-year-old man was arrested in connection with the wider disturbance and was later released pending further enquiries.

A second man, also aged 21, was assaulted during the incident and suffered minor injuries.

Police said a 20-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with that separate assault and is due to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court at a later date.

Detectives have been examining CCTV from around Royal Exchange Square and previously appealed for anyone with mobile phone footage or dash-cam recordings from the area to come forward.

The square, close to the Gallery of Modern Art and Duke of Wellington statue, was sealed off following the incident as officers carried out investigations at the scene.

Detective Inspector Jonny MacKinnon said: “Our thoughts are with the family of the man who has died.

“No one has been arrested in connection with the death of the man at this time and extensive enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.

“Anyone with information who has not already spoken to officers is asked to contact us on 101, quoting incident number 0494 of Sunday, 4 October, 2026.”

The death came during an exceptionally busy weekend for police in Glasgow city centre.

Police Scotland said officers dealt with assaults, robberies, disturbances, hate crimes, an attempted murder and a wilful fire-raising between Friday and Sunday.

Chief Inspector Stephen McManus, Glasgow city centre local area commander, described the levels of violence and disorder as “deplorable” and said further enquiries were continuing to identify people involved in criminality.

He said:  “Glasgow City Centre was extremely busy over the weekend, and we had a high-visibility policing presence, with officers responding decisively to challenging levels of demand and taking swift action to make arrests.

“In the most extreme incident, one man sadly lost his life, and our thoughts and condolences are with his family at this very difficult time.

“While the vast majority of people visiting and socialising in the city centre behave responsibly, we continue to experience issues with violence, disorder and anti-social behaviour.

“The arrests made over the weekend send a clear message that this type of deplorable criminality has no place in our city, and anyone involved should expect to be arrested.

“We remain committed to having a visible policing presence in the city centre and working with partners to tackle the behaviour that causes harm and concern in our communities.”
